About this experience
This tour will allow you to set the right direction for your journey on the first day in Lisbon, feel the spirit of the city, and grasp the events of its past. We will walk from the medieval Alfama to bohemian Chiado, climb to the stunning viewpoints, and of course, talk about the twists and turns of Portuguese history. Before you, plots about kings and monks, earthquakes and great discoveries will come to life, from which the unique image of Lisbon will gradually emerge.
What to expect
From kings to explorers
The journey into Lisbon's past will begin at Restauradores Square, where the pivotal events of Portuguese history will be revealed to you. At the beautiful Rossio station, we will discuss the colonial past, then move on to the nearby square where you will be transported back to the era of the Great Discoveries that made Portugal one of Europe's wealthiest empires. You will pass by ancient shops and cafes at Dom Pedro IV Square and then find yourself in the "Bermuda Triangle of Drunks": as an experienced pilot, I will safely guide you through it.
Medieval spirit of Lisbon
Next, we will explore the oldest neighborhoods of the city, which have been preserved in their original form to this day. In Mouraria, the birthplace of the Portuguese fado romance, you will explore narrow streets and buildings from the medieval times, and then you will encounter the winding alleys of Alfama. We will talk about the Crusades and the conquests of the Moors at Saint George's Castle, climb to viewpoints with magnificent views of Lisbon, and along the way, we will encounter the Cathedral and Church of Saint Anthony - this saint's name is associated with many legends, miracles, and traditions in Portugal.
Baixa and Chiado: stories of bohemian quarters
After a short break with a cup of coffee and pastry, you will find yourself at Commerce Square and meet the figure of the Marquis of Pombal, thanks to whom the city gained a new life after a devastating earthquake. We will stroll through Baixa district, take a look at the first urban Santa Justa Lift, and then walk through Chiado - the Lisbon bohemian quarter. You will see the world's first bookshop and the iconic café A Brasileira, and near the Carmelite Monastery, you will hear about three key events in Portuguese history. At the end of the tour, we will head to Gloria Funicular to descend the steep slope in a yellow car, observing the local street art.
