About this experience
By visiting the Albanian shore of the lake, we step onto the "Land of Eagles", washed by the gentle waters of the Adriatic and Ionian seas. I will lead you through the centuries from pre-Christian times to modernity and tell you about the people inhabiting the republic. You will visit a fortress that has towered here for 24 centuries, see the famous mosque, and authentic Venetian masks.
What to Expect
Capital of Northern Albania
You will drive along the shores of the picturesque Lake Skadar - the largest in the Balkan Peninsula - and find yourself in ancient Shkodër. Along the way, you will see the striking mountain ranges of the 'Albanian Alps'. We will ascend to a viewing platform above the mountain gorge, where you can take beautiful photos. The shady streets, silver jewelry, and delicious food will immerse you in the local color, and I will tell you interesting facts from the history of the state that will reveal Albania to you.
Little Italy
Do you know that the masks for the Venetian Carnival are produced in Albania? On a tour of the workshop, you will learn about the process of their production and the secret and laborious 'cartapesta' technique. And if desired, you can purchase a handmade souvenir in the showroom near the factory, perfectly suited for you.
Tales of the Ancient Citadel
Ascending to the legendary fortress of Rozafa, you will hear a mysterious legend about its construction. And the panoramic platform will reveal a pastoral view of the mountain valley, Lake Skadar, the city of Shkodër, the confluence of the winding rivers Drin and Buna, and the cult multi-domed Lead Mosque. We will discuss its features and differences from traditional places of worship.
Gastronomic Traditions
Shkodër is a true paradise for seafood lovers and wine connoisseurs! There is no better place to try the national cuisine! Lunch at a local restaurant will pleasantly surprise you with a variety of dishes and their affordability. Strolling through the historic center and Kole Idromeno Street, you will notice the amazing proximity of a mosque, an Orthodox cathedral, a Franciscan and Catholic church, and see a monument to the most famous Albanian woman. And the final chord of our day in Albania will be a café-bar with a viewpoint, where all of Shkodër will unfold before you.
Additional Options
By prior arrangement, it is also possible to visit a farm and the Mrizi i Zanave 'slow food' restaurant near Shkodër - this will add a minimum of 2 hours to the total trip time.
If you have already been to Shkodër, we can adjust the route and visit the cities of Tirana, Durrës, or Kruja (please write to me in advance about this when ordering). By agreement, we can also visit one of the beaches in Albania or a large sandy beach in Ulcinj.
