The Fate of the Legendary King of Bohemia
I will tell you the captivating story of Charles IV - a man with a complex destiny, who was the head of secular authority in Europe during the second half of the 14th century. Charles held the title of Emperor of Rome, King of Bohemia, Germany, Lombardy, Duke of Brandenburg, and these are just some of his titles! You will learn why Charles' father was the last true knight of Europe, why Charles was imprisoned at the age of 3, and called to aid in war at the age of 15. I will tell you how the king studied in Paris, honed in battles in Italy, and then returned to Prague to make it one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and the New Jerusalem.
A Walk through 'Charles' Places' in Old Prague
We will visit the main attractions of Prague, each closely related to the life and reign of Charles IV. We will meet at Prague Castle, talk about the construction of the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral and life in medieval Prague. You will learn why Charles IV came up with the legend of Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia, and where the mystical Czech crown is kept. I will show you Charles Bridge, Old Town and Wenceslas Square, Charles University and New Town, tell you what stories and legends these places hold and how they are connected to the legendary king. And of course, we will talk about the grand celebration in 2016 in the Czech Republic marking the 700th anniversary of Charles IV's birth.
