Kiel is a major port city on the Baltic Sea, the capital of the northernmost federal state of Germany - Schleswig-Holstein. It serves as a point of departure and arrival for cruise ships from all over the world, as well as large ferries to Norway and Sweden. This city is primarily known internationally for hosting the annual international sailing regatta "Kieler Woche" at the end of June - the most important event in global sailing and the largest summer festival in northern Germany. During this time, Kiel welcomes around 2000 ships and nearly 3 million visitors.
Both the Russian Emperor Peter III (1728) and the German theoretical physicist, founder of quantum theory - Max Planck (1858), were born here. In 1913, the echo sounder was invented in Kiel by scientist Alexander Behm.
When in the city, you must try the famous Kiel sprats, elevated to the status of the city's signature dish. The locals are even nicknamed 'Kiel sprats'.
