About this experience
Not everyone knows about the Jewish chapter of the Austrian capital, so our tour will not be touristy. We will talk about Sigmund Freud and Gustav Klimt Museum, the idea of creating a Jewish state, and the Holocaust. You will visit Jewish spots in the city and immerse yourselves in its unknown 'biography'.
What to expect
Through the centuries: Chronicles of the Jewish community of Austria
We will trace the entire history of Viennese Jews: from the first mention in official documents to the present day. You will find out which Jewish family laid the foundation for the community and what the Mint Court has to do with it. I will tell you about Emperor Friedrich II's decree and the first synagogue. I will explain how Theodor Herzl decided to create a Jewish state in Palestine and who posed for Gustav Klimt's 'Golden Adele'. The popularity of Sigmund Freud and the sporting successes of Jews, the musical discoveries of Schoenberg, and the world's first Jewish History Museum - we will discuss how community representatives influenced all spheres of life in Vienna and Austria as a whole. Of course, we will also touch upon the tragic events of World War II.
Through Jewish spots: atypical locations
In modern Vienna, there are not many buildings that hold the memory of Jews. We will visit Judenplatz, which was once the center of the Jewish town. At the 19th-century synagogue, you will understand why its luxurious facade is integrated into a block of houses. If desired, you can visit the nearby Jewish History Museum and examine the artifacts there. We will also visit the Holocaust Memorial. You will learn how locals call it, when it was erected, and who designed its layout.
