About this experience
Istanbul is the meeting point of two religions on the Bosphorus. You will visit the magnificent Sultan Eyup Mosque, the iron church of St. Stephen, the Byzantine church of Mary Mongolian, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. You will ascend to an observation platform with breathtaking panoramas, explore the delightful Balat district, and hear many fascinating stories about the city.
What to Expect
Sultan Eyup Mosque and Vibrant Balat District
You will see the famous Sultan Eyup Mosque—one of the most important pilgrim sites for Muslims. I will reveal why it is so revered and how Sultan Fatih thanked the person who donated money for its construction. And from the observation deck with a beautiful view of the city, I will tell the story of a young Frenchman's love for a Turkish woman. The walk continues in the authentic Balat district with colorful houses: this is where the Turkish series "Chukur" was filmed.
Christian Sites in Istanbul
We will discuss the significance of religion in Constantinople, visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and touch the column to which Christ was bound before the crucifixion. We will also admire the Bulgarian iron church of St. Stephen. Lastly, we will peek into the church of Mary Mongolian, preserved since Byzantine times. You will learn why the Ottomans did not convert it into a mosque and why the locals called it "bloody".
