About this experience
Welcome to the 'bitten' by Istanbul club! My tour is for those who want to get to know the city on a deeper level. You will explore the colorful districts of Fatih and Eyüp with their ancient mosques and echoes of Byzantium, and see three most beautiful panoramas. And I will fill the walk with stories about the past and present of Istanbul and the Turkish people.
What to Expect
Treasures and stories of the Fatih and Eyüp neighborhoods
The tour will start with a story about a former laundress who slapped the French empress. In 6 hours, you will hear many amazing stories! I will tell you about the great Ottoman architect Sinan: you will see his masterpieces - the Mosque of the Heir and the Mosque of Mihrimah. I will also show you the geographical center of Istanbul during the time of Suleiman the Magnificent.
We will also talk about a man after whom the neighborhood and the Fatih Mosque are named - Sultan Mehmed II, who conquered Constantinople. You will see his tomb and hear about the Greek architect who almost cut off his hands. Then the gates through which Fatih entered Constantinople will lead us beyond the Byzantine walls.
If desired, we will pass through the cemetery where the heroes of the failed coup in 2016 are buried, as well as the creator of the Turkish anthem - here I will tell you about the last journey of devout Muslims.
In the final part, you will peek into the Mosque and Tomb of Eyüp - I will explain why Muslims from all over the world come here and reveal the meaning of the ritual of 'drawing the sword' for sultans ascending to the throne.
Three impressive panoramas
We will visit a cozy family café near the walls of the former monastery of Christ Pantocrator: over a cup of tea, you will enjoy the panorama and learn unusual facts about the landmarks visible from here. Another viewpoint will appear just around the corner amidst colorful alleys of residential neighborhoods - from here, the contrasts of Istanbul are particularly well seen. Finally, you will visit Pierre Loti hill, in the park of which the locals like to relax. In a local historical café, you will enjoy views of the Golden Horn bay.
Useful tips and secrets of Turkish life
I will gladly tell you about my Turkish family, about converting to Islam, about local customs and holidays, about salaries and prices. I will explain how to distinguish the Golden Horn from the Bosphorus and why it is incorrect to say that Istanbul is located on seven hills. With my help, you will learn to navigate the city, and I will be in touch every day of your stay in Istanbul. Moreover, you will receive photos as a keepsake!
