What to Expect

Orthodox Origins
Modern Istanbul is the direct heir of the great city of Constantinople. For a devout Orthodox person, it will be no less interesting than Jerusalem or Mount Athos. It is here that the concept of Orthodoxy itself originated, the Symbol of Faith was approved at one of the Ecumenical Councils, and the Most Holy Theotokos covered the city with her omophorion and miraculously saved it from invaders. On the way from one church to another, I will share the religious past of Istanbul and tell you about the origins of the shrines we will visit.

Meeting Non-Muslim Istanbul
Our pilgrimage walk will begin with attending a worship service in one of the Orthodox churches. Depending on the day of the week, we will participate in the Divine Liturgy in the Greek or Russian church. Then we will visit 5-6 unique churches that you will not find on standard tourist routes. The walk will cover:

• Vlaherna Church (Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos)
• Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen
• The Church of the Mongolian Martyrs
• The Athonite Dependency of St. Panteleimon
• The Turkish Patriarchate
• The Church of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki
• Monastery of the "Vital Source"
