About this experience
This will be a friendly walk through the colorful quarters of the city, Istiklal Street, passages, ancient stalls, and modern galleries. In the Christian churches, we will hear echoes of the vanished Byzantium, and in the winding streets of Istanbul, we will find traces of the Ottoman Empire and white emigration. In the colorful Karakoy, if you wish, we will add bright gastronomic experiences to the walk.
What to Expect
I will guide you through one of my favorite routes in this great city.
- We will ride a retro tram to the Galata Tower. We will climb it if you desire.
- We will visit the Crimean Church and the Catholic Church of St. Antoine
- We will walk along the bustling Istiklal Street and discuss white emigration. We will discover its traces in passages and small shops.
- We will turn towards the impressive Orthodox Greek Church. If you wish, we can linger here and light a candle for the health of loved ones.
- Next, we will encounter intertwining ancient stalls and modern art galleries.
- Passing by vintage shop windows, we will gradually reach colorful Karakoy. We will walk to the umbrella street, immerse ourselves in a whirlpool of restaurants and cafes to taste Istanbul.
- We will end our journey at a unique mosque, which hides many secrets and legends.
What I recommend trying on our walk (additional cost):
- Salap drink (Turks drink it in late autumn, winter, and early spring)
- Fish in lavash
- Triangular baklava with dondurma filling
- Fragrant Turkish tea in tulip-shaped glasses
- And of course, Turkish coffee
If you want to enjoy a separate gastronomic pleasure, we can take a stroll to a soup restaurant in the building of the former Church of St. Nicholas, where they serve 21 types of Turkish soups.
Organizational Details
- Additionally paid (optional): entrance to the Galata Tower - €21/person, lunch - from €20/person.
- Women need to have a scarf to visit churches and mosques, take some cash in Turkish lira (about 100 lira) to buy candles.
- We will do a lot of walking on the walk. Please wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. For winter Istanbul, waterproof shoes, an umbrella, or raincoat are necessary.
