About this experience
Shuya is a cozy ancient Russian town that was once the center of the eponymous principality. You will walk along Torgovaya Street, see the Resurrection Cathedral, and the tallest standalone bell tower in Europe. I will tell you how Shuya grew and developed, which famous people visited it, and what it lives on today.
What awaits you
Please note: the tour can only be conducted in your vehicle (it should have space for the guide).
City's iconic places
You will see the carefully restored 19th-century railway station. You will walk along the local Arbat - the former Torgovaya Street - and learn how carts with goods were weighed in the 'important'. You will see the only monument in the country 'To Those Who Perished for the Faith' and hear about the Shuya affair of 1922. Admire the Resurrection Cathedral and the 106-meter bell tower. You will also visit a shop of local craftsmen and optionally purchase original souvenirs.
History and people
I will tell you why Shuya is often compared to St. Petersburg, how it became the 'capital of Russian Christmas,' and which long-destroyed church unexpectedly revived on the eve of the holiday. Why Tsar Vasily Shuysky was called the 'furrier,' in honor of which event a bell was cast, and how one of the largest bells of the 19th century perished. We will also talk about the famous people associated with the city: poet Balmont, art critic Tsvetaeva, and architect Marichelli.
