About this experience
The region between the Volga and the Oka rivers is truly amazing. Seeing a cluster of small towns on the map - Plyos, Privolzhsk, Volgorechensk - you might expect to enter a remote province. It's even more astonishing to discover hidden gems, much like Levitan was inspired by this land. Here, above the eternal peace, you will hear illustrious names, tune into a lyrical mood, and taste Plyos delicacies.
What to Expect
Zalessky Rus'
Two Golden Ring cities, Kostroma and Plyos, are situated in a region with a melodious name - Zalessye. Here, the beauty of landscapes intertwines with centuries-old history and the traditions of ancient crafts. Along the way, we'll collect a 'necklace' of towns (famous and not so much) and indulge in typical Volga entertainment - admiring landscapes, river cruises, and tasting fish.
Plyos: About Levitan and More
Museums and art galleries adorned with wooden carvings, houses, and even lace gutters - all worth seeing! We will explore the city by car: the route will include Torgovaya Square, Sobornaya Hill, the monument to the Plyos cat Muha, the famous sculpture 'Dachnitsa,' and the monument to Shalyapin. We won't overlook the artist Levitan: we'll visit his house-museum and climb the hill for that 'painted' view.
From local gastronomic landmarks, I recommend trying the famous Plyos 'corner' (open pie) and fragrant smoked fish, which used to be supplied from here to the imperial table. If you wish, you can take a motorboat ride on the Volga or swim right in the city center. You can also visit the salon of a local artist and purchase his works.
Privozhsk: Monastic Village
On the way back, we will drive through the town of Privozhsk. You will see the Nikolsky Women's Monastery, the unique 'dancing' Lenin, and the old manufactory. Optionally, you can bathe in the holy spring and visit the Old Believer chapel.
Volgorechensk: City of Power Engineers
Here you will discover how different Volgorechensk is from its 'siblings.' A failed 'city of the future,' it emerged as a Komsomol construction site in 1969. Today, it is home to the largest thermal power plant in Europe. By special arrangement at booking, you can visit a local fishery.
