About this experience
I invite art lovers to visit the country's main art museum - the Hungarian National Gallery, located in Buda Castle. The collection includes masterpieces of painting and sculpture by Hungarian and European artists from the 13th to the 20th centuries, created in Hungary or commissioned by Hungarians, as well as exhibits from the contemporary art exhibition 'Changing Step.'
What to Expect
The museum's collection is incredibly rich: you can choose any period that interests you or take part in a guided tour. I will tell you about the history of the building, which unfortunately was never a royal palace, and show the only hall that reminds us of its past. Currently, it hosts a beautiful exhibition of late Gothic winged altarpieces: each altarpiece has its own story and mystery.
A small exhibition from the Renaissance era reminds us of the glorious past of the Hungarian Kingdom during the reign of King Matthias. You will learn about Beatrice and her influence on Hungarian art.
The 19th century was a time of reform and development in Hungarian art, a century of national tragedies, dramas, travels, novels, and, of course, beautiful muses. I will answer all these questions and introduce you to the Hungarian Mona Lisa by Merse Szinyei. You will find out what Isadora Duncan was doing in Budapest and with which Hungarian artists Picasso wanted to create Cubism. You will decide if Chontvari's paintings resemble Pirosmani's works, and I will show you the halls of Mihaly Munkacsy, as his works are gradually disappearing. Believe me, Hungarian art is one of the most fascinating in Europe!
