About this experience
Hoorn is a place unfairly overlooked. Some 400 years ago, the quiet town was bathed in glory and wealth. The masts of ships of the East India Company swayed in the harbor, and market scales creaked under the weight of overseas goods. Narrow streets, houses with whimsical pediments, towers with battlements - witnesses to the greatness of Hoorn. Believe me, they have a lot to tell!
What to expect
Hoorn Stories
- How local fishermen on small boats defeated the Spanish Armada
- How housewives, to save their hometown, gave all their candlesticks and candelabras to blacksmiths
- How the ingenious shipbuilders of Hoorn designed the world's first steering wheel, and no less ingenious merchants came up with an elegant way to evade taxes - surprisingly, it was not for this that the people called the horn-bearer...
- How Captain William Bontekoe saved his youths from cannibals
And how many interesting and contradictory stories Hoorn remembers about the first Dutch colonists and their dangerous journeys!
Our plan
- We will visit the most beautiful streets of Hoorn
- You will see the harbor with the imposing Main Tower and the city square with the cheese market and the "bloody stone" in the forehead seat
- We will look at the Beer Quay and the former women's monastery
- We will unravel the mysteries of the facades and read a whole comic strip on the 17th-century building
- If desired, you can taste local herring or have a snack with something else in a cozy restaurant inside the historic Weighing House
Organizational details
- The road from Amsterdam to Hoorn will take up to 40 minutes
- I will pick you up in a comfortable Kia Niro 2021 or Kia Sportage 2022 from a convenient place for you in Amsterdam and take you back after the tour
- There is no child seat in the car, so unfortunately, trips with children under 12 are not possible
- We will walk on foot through Hoorn
