What to expect
Hale historic market
It is said that the city market is the perfect place to learn about the locals' way of life. During the stroll, you will hear about the sad and joyful events that have left a mark on the 600-year history of the market in Vilnius. I will also tell you about how the trading sites looked in the past, what was sold here, which days were market days, and why. We will also discuss what Hale means to the residents and why they come here, apart from their necessary purchases.
Lithuania's gastronomic pride
Wandering through the rows, you will discover the goods offered at the market today and what products are considered national gastronomic treasures. I will also explain what you can bring from Vilnius not only as a tasty souvenir but also as a souvenir with a long, sometimes centuries-old history.
- In the cheese stalls, you will learn about the cheeses characteristic of the region and how they are produced. I will share who in the Middle Ages had this product on their tables and what, besides milk, they learned to make cheese from here.
- In the meat rows, you will be convinced that Lithuania is rightly called the land of pork and lard. I will reveal the secrets of the locals, each of whom has their own approach to choosing meat products. And I will take you to places where traditional products are made according to ancient family recipes.
- In snack bars and small restaurants, you will be able to taste dishes from various regions. In addition to the market cafe, I will suggest many interesting places where they cook real pilaf from lamb, serve fabulous fish dishes, oysters, offer juicy fresh or cocktails, and in numerous coffee shops — wonderful coffee.
- In stalls with foreign and local products to suit every taste, I will guide you through the assortment of Italian, Greek, Armenian, and, of course, Lithuanian products.
- Additionally, I will tell you about the bagel ('beigelines'), the meaning of the word 'bagel,' and the history of its appearance in Vilnius.
- In the small shop of Lithuanian products Roots, you will learn the interesting story of its creation, hear about cheeses made according to Italian and French recipes — and try some of them, about Lithuanian small farms, get acquainted with the products of local winemakers, and I will tell you the fascinating story of the creation of some wines.
