About this experience
You are invited on a journey to a castle that is completely unique with its pristine interiors, rarities, and intriguing stories.
Gripsholm Castle (Swedish: Gripsholms slott) is located in the town of Mariefred. The name of this town translates as 'the peace of Maria'. The castle was built for the knight Bo Jonsson Grip, who founded it way back in 1380.
Gripsholm is a castle that changed hands several times, but eventually became a sanctuary for the widowed queens of Sweden.
Here, in the pains of labor, queens gave birth to their children, future kings of Sweden. Here they loved and hated, imprisoned and killed. But it was here that, at the cutting edge of technology of that time, the theater of Gustav III was built, in which Swedish-language plays were staged for the first time in Sweden.
If that doesn't impress you, then certainly some rarities associated with Russian tsars will amaze you. The palace intertwines the history of Sweden with the history of Russia. Just imagine seeing cannons cast by the order of Ivan the Terrible himself, which the Swedes dragged all the way from Narva and Ivan-Gorod!
Come visit! Be amazed!
