Georgian Style and Fashion: From Chokhas to World Runways
About this experience
Georgian style in clothing has always stood out and been easily recognizable. Here you can find incredible combinations of intricate ornaments, sunny colors and eclecticism, as well as elegant total black with a refined silhouette. During the walk or in a cafe, we will talk about traditional costumes and the symbolism of 'prints' in antiquity, trends in the 20th century, and modern Georgian designers with a global reputation.
What to Expect
Centuries Past
You will learn how different layers of society dressed - from princes to peasants - three hundred years ago. You will also hear about the secret meaning of ornaments and the practical benefits of certain details, methods of fabric production, and the 'smart' multilayering of national clothing.
Turbulent 20th Century
I will tell you how the streets of Tbilisi and Batumi blossomed with dresses and hats at the beginning of the last century. When entrepreneurs and adventurers from all over the world flocked to Georgia, elegant mansions were built in the cities in the modern style, and the attire of beauties and dandies intertwined East and West, ancient traditions and the latest European fashion. How did the 'Tbilisi Parisians' - artists Elena Akhvlediani, Lado Gudiashvili, David Kakabadze - influence the fashion sense of the townspeople. And about the word in the history of theatrical costume said by the brilliant artist Petre Ochkheli.
The Phenomenon of Modern Georgian Fashion
In the 21st century, Georgia hosted three different fashion weeks, for over 10 years Georgian designers have been shining on world runways, and my friends have long been bringing not only wine but also clothes from this country. I will tell you about the most famous designers and suggest where to find fashionable boutiques in Batumi and Tbilisi.
Where We Will Stroll
The excursion is not tied to a specific route, so you can choose: a promenade along Batumi Boulevard, a walk through the streets and cozy courtyards of the Old Town, a warm chat in one or two city cafes (recommended in hot or rainy weather). Or ask me when ordering the tour which option is best for your situation. I will have a tablet with a presentation with me, and I will also show you several interesting shops.
Organizational Details
No additional expenses are expected, except for possible expenses in cafes.
