About this experience
In the middle of the 20th century, Japanese prisoners of war laid a road through the Big Almaty Gorge along a mountain serpentine. In our time, it has become one of the most popular routes for locals and city guests. There are several reasons for that: close to Almaty, the route is not long, and even a child can handle it. While you enjoy the picturesque places and mountain air, a guide will tell you about the history of this place, unique Sivers apple trees, and the inhabitants of the mountains - animals and birds.
What to expect
The Japanese Road is located 20 kilometers from the city. We will meet in the center of Almaty and drive to the eco-post, from where the trek will begin. You will enjoy the panoramas of the Zailiysky Alatau mountains, namely the Big Almaty Gorge, as well as the picturesque local vegetation.
Along the way, we will see unique Sivers apple trees, considered the ancestors of apples on the planet, and lush thickets of honeysuckle, rose hips, sea buckthorn, which are abundant in our land. In the warm season, you can collect berries, apples, herbs for tea here. The guide will tell you about the nearest peaks and waterfalls in case you decide to hike in the mountains on your own next time.
The one-way journey will take 2-2.5 hours, depending on your physical fitness level. We will move at your pace, but we will have to walk more than 10 km, so assess your strength.
