About this experience
About an hour's drive from Tbilisi, there is a unique sanctuary housing rescued wild and domestic animals. We will visit to observe bears, wolves, horses, and have the opportunity to feed them. On our way back, we will stop by the mountain monastery of Mamkoda, explore the abandoned town of Tsikari, and have a small picnic with tea/coffee in a picturesque location.
What to Expect
Bear Sanctuary
We will visit a zoological center that rescues animals. Currently, there are 18 bears, 4 wolves, 4 horses, dogs, and cats living here. The sanctuary has been operating since 2010 on private investments. All animals have been rescued from nearby forests, are supported by donations, and freely roam in fenced areas away from visitors. You will have the chance to observe and feed them with special treats that I will provide. We will spend about 1 hour here.
Return Journey
We will travel to and from the sanctuary along a scenic road amidst mountains, rocky forests, and valleys. En route:
- We will visit the male monastery of Mamkoda, situated on a mountain, and admire the surroundings of Tbilisi. I will share insights on the existence of the Georgian Orthodox Church in the 20th century.
- We will explore the nearly abandoned town of Tsikari and listen to echoes of the Soviet era.
- We will stop at a peaceful spot to admire Georgia's stunning nature and enjoy a picnic with tea/coffee and light snacks such as cookies or candies.
- If desired, we can visit the memorial of the 'Chronicles of Georgia' - a huge monument resembling Stonehenge, designed by the architect Zurab Tsereteli.

Dogs, horses, and donkeys can be touched and fed by hand, lazy bears may even stand on their hind legs and catch apples. As for the wolves.....
