About this experience
Faro has survived the world's largest earthquake, and now storks guard every house here - symbols of goodness, light and faith. You will walk through narrow streets to important spots of the reborn city and learn about its history from the moment of foundation: you will definitely be impressed by the hospitality and resilience of Faro.
What to expect
Three-hour walk through the ancient Faro
The fortress-city that withstood the earthquake - Faro was heavily damaged by the elements in 1755. A large number of buildings had to be rebuilt, which is why you will notice many low houses in the city. We will stroll through its old part and inspect the important constructions of Faro.
At the entrance to the city stand the most beautiful gates - Arco da Vila, from there we will begin our immersion in the history of the capital of the Algarve. Under the arch, you will learn when and by whom the city was built and what the people did here.
As we ascend to the Central Square, your attention will be captured by the riot of bright and warm colors - these are orange trees with aromatic and juicy fruits, which can also be considered a local attraction :) Here you will enter the Church of Saint Mary to appreciate the decoration of the sanctuary and hear about the period of geographical discoveries, as well as about the times of slavery.
Descending down a narrow ancient street to the Jewish Quarter, along the way enjoying a cup of traditional Portuguese coffee and indulging in a fresh pastry pashet-de-nata. In the Regional Museum, a former Assumption convent, I will fully reveal the history of Faro, with the museum's exhibits helping me in this.
Next to Arco Repuš, you will hear the legend of the enchanted Moorish woman, why the roofs of the city have such whimsical shapes, and why the Algarvians do not consider themselves Portuguese.
In a leisurely manner, you will visit key and interesting locations in Faro, learn about its history and inhabitants, and ask me any questions.
