About this experience
You will get acquainted with majestic Gothic cathedrals and discover the rare beauty of interiors in an inconspicuous church. Walking along cozy canals, you will learn legends from the lives of neat houses. Experience the world of ancient sounds in the museum of street organs. Listen about amusing gastronomic traditions, taste the 'best potato in the Netherlands' and farmhouse cheese. And in the end, you will understand why Utrecht is one of the happiest cities in the world.
What to expect
Landmarks
We will meet at Utrecht Centraal railway station and head to the old center passing the square where witches were burned in the 16th century. At the foot of the city's symbol, you will hear legends of the tallest tower in the Netherlands, the Dom Tower. Learn about the centuries-old path of the Dom Cathedral, which has undergone many destructions but has always been restored. Behind the facades of the inconspicuous — and therefore rarely visited — neo-Gothic St. Willibrord Church, you will discover rare and beautiful interiors created by Dutch masters at the end of the 19th century. Explore the St. Peter's Church, one of the oldest in the country, and the St. John's Church built in its image. You will also see an interesting post office from the beginning of the last century, the monument of the 'contemplative hare,' the square with traffic lights of Miffy the Bunny (a character from the book by Dutch artist Dick Bruna).
Cozy canals
You will learn about the history of the 'two-story' Oudegracht canal and visit several interesting establishments among the many local shops, designer stores, galleries, and historic cafes. During a walk along the Drift canal, I will tell you about the traditional approach to decorating building facades and reveal the secrets living in their courtyards. Later, you will rest on the picturesque quay, and then, if desired, visit the remarkable museum of street organs, where you will experience the world of ancient sounds. You will also visit a local favorite hidden garden and find the 'longest' poems in the world, which are written right before the audience's eyes.
Gastronomic Brands
An acquaintance with Dutch cities is unthinkable without cuisine — during the Utrecht tour, you will learn all about national gastronomy and its amusing traditions. On the bustling quay or under medieval vaults, you will taste aromatic coffee. In a bar located in a former secret church, you will try Belgian beer, visit a homey grocery store-museum, and appreciate french fries — the potato that locals consider the best in the Netherlands. And on Wednesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays, I will include a visit to the traditional market in the program, where farmer's cheese, caramel waffles, Dutch herring, and kibbeling await you.
Additional Options
If desired, after the excursion, you can visit a very unusual house designed by the classic of modernist architecture Gerrit Rietveld, or an interactive railway museum, or the Miffy the Bunny museum. Or even visit the largest castle in the Netherlands — De Haar.
🚩 If the tour falls on a Saturday, we will stop by the flower market. We will talk about 'tulip mania' and modern flower auctions.
