About this experience
Join me to explore the most significant places in Samarkand! You will visit the central square of Registan, the mausoleum of Tamerlane, and the magnificent Bibi-Khanym Mosque. I will share the past and present of this beloved city, its traditions, and cultural features in a heartfelt atmosphere.
What to Expect
Tamerlane's Mausoleum. I will talk about the life, victories, campaigns, and the 'curse' of Tamerlane. How he rose to power and the obstacles he faced. I will also share insights into Timurid architecture using the mausoleum as an example and teach you to distinguish between maiolica and mosaic.
Registan Square. It reflects the history of Samarkand, tracing back to the times of the Great Silk Road. When Registan was a hub for merchants from around the world. Today, it houses three madrasas. You will learn what they are, when they were built, and the scientific discoveries associated with them. What do the tigers symbolize on the portal of Sher-Dor Madrasa and is it true that Tilya-Kori Madrasa is made of gold.
Bibi-Khanym Mosque. Even today, it impresses guests with its scale and size. How did Tamerlane manage to build it in the 15th century? Was Bibi-Khanym his great love or a way to approach the coveted title? We will talk about all of this during the tour.
University Boulevard. You will see from the car window a 150-year-old boulevard, created during the Russian Empire. I will explain how it is connected to the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
