About this experience
The history of money spans 4000 years, but at the very beginning, there were no actual coins or banknotes. Who invented them and how did they come into existence? How did money shape our lives and what are 'flying money'? You will explore not only the monetary history but also the world history, narrated through cowrie shells, treasury tags, Mesopotamian clay tablets, coins, banknotes, and other objects exhibited in the Money Gallery.
What to Expect
A bit about the format
My excursions are suitable for both adults and children. There will be plenty of interaction, communication, and games. This will help you better absorb the material and turn you from listeners into active participants!
During the excursion, you will learn:
- what people used before the invention of money
- which factors influenced the emergence of the first coins
- in which kingdom the first coins were minted and what material was used for this purpose
- where people kept money before banks appeared
- how independent traders reacted to the financial crisis in 17–18th century Britain and who came to the aid of a country where 70% of all coins in the 18th century were counterfeit
- as a result of which events the Bank of England was founded and how it differs from all other banks in the country
- who coined the term 'British money'
Additionally:
- what 'flying money' is and why it is called that
- in which country the heaviest coins were minted and how much they weighed
- who invented the first plastic card
- what connects us, bank card users, with people who had no knowledge of money
