About this experience
I invite you to a tour of the second largest museum after the Louvre and the most popular in the UK. Its exhibits tell the history of humanity, spanning two million years, from the first known objects created by human hands, to the beginning of urban civilization, and to the monuments of the Enlightenment era. We will travel to the cities of the Sumerians and the kingdom of Ancient Egypt, talk about Babylonian palaces, examine Assyrian reliefs, appreciate the scale of the statues of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. And this is only a small part of our program.
What to expect
The objects of the British Museum tell the global history of antiquity as a series of captivating stories that often intersect with each other. Together, we will try to hear these stories.
- We will decipher the reliefs of the Athens Parthenon, which classical art history considered the cradle of European art (and discuss why this is not the case).
- We will note the highest artistic realism of Assyrian artists, who depicted lion hunting in the 7th century BC, and see the first "declaration" of human rights written in cuneiform on a clay cylinder.
- We will closely examine the Rosetta Stone, which allowed the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs, the secret of which was lost for almost two thousand years.
- We will pay attention to samples of the earliest writing and try to understand how the famous myths of the flood and the Tower of Babel were formed in poetry.
- We will talk about the invention of the wheel - and see one of its earliest depictions.
- We will examine a board game created 4,500 years ago.
- You will also learn when and why gold coins were invented.
- We will find many precious treasures, among which one stands out especially - it contained the magnificent helmet of a mysterious ancient king who lived almost fifteen hundred years ago.
- We will talk about the people who built Stonehenge and try to dispel the myth of the "dark ages".
- We will get acquainted with unique ivory chess pieces created a thousand years ago by the descendants of the Vikings.
- You will see one of the best examples of a 15th-century Novgorod icon - "George the Victorious on a Black Horse" and luxurious 16th-century clocks, to the music of which Martin Luther wrote.
- In addition, we will touch upon the traces of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations and examine a crystal skull featured in the Indiana Jones movies.
Who the tour is suitable for
The genre of history is suitable for both adults and children, so people of all ages from 4 years old are invited to the tour.
