About this experience
In Baku, like in a kaleidoscope, completely different 'glass pieces' come together to form beautiful images. In the light of the evening illumination, you will appreciate the harmony of ancient fortress walls and modern Flame Towers, immerse yourself in traditions and new architectural solutions. The route will pass through two key parts of Baku: the Old City and the districts of the oil boom era. In just 3 hours, you will learn the most important facts about the history, architecture, and life of the 'city of winds' and the 'land of fire'.
What to Expect
Old City: concentration of history and color
We will start the tour from the oldest part of Baku, the roots of the capital - from Icheri-sheher, which means 'Inner City'. This place is perfect for immersing yourself in history, architecture, and culture all at once. You will trace the stages of development of the Old City, learn about the way of life in the past and the families living here today. The Twin Gates, the tower shrouded in legends called the Maiden's Tower, and the medieval Palace of the Shirvanshahs will introduce you to the features of the Absheron architectural school. I will also tell you about the movies filmed in Icheri-sheher and show you a place called 'Damn'.
Capital of the oil boom: new Baku and new people
Leaving the fortress walls, you will enter the European capital of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, the time of the oil industry boom and big money. You will hear stories about people who overnight became millionaires, about the development of infrastructure and greening of Baku, about the first water supply, the theater in the Middle East, and the dried-up sea. We will also talk about the city's life during the Soviet era. The backdrop for the stories will be the most beautiful buildings in Baku: the Ismailiyya, the Duma, the Taghiyev School, the Mukhtarov Mansion, the Philharmonic, and others.
Modern city and timeless traditions
Walking through the Old City and the new Baku, you will often notice the shining Flame Towers and other modern buildings with fashionable illumination. I will tell you about the emergence of new architectural symbols of the capital, about ambitious projects and their implementation. I will answer any questions about how modern Azerbaijanis live: we will talk about our way of life, weddings, and other celebrations, national arts, and cuisine.
