About this experience
A dynamic, rapidly developing capital where Islamic, Soviet, and postmodern architecture blend together. You will see the 'city of winds and fire'. Get lost in the cobblestone streets of the old quarter, witness Soviet Baku, admire the mansions of oil barons, and marvel at the contemporary bold structures. I promise a rich narrative about the city's history, ancient customs, and vibrant traditions.
What to Expect
Medieval Streets of the Old City
Passing through Double Gates, you will find yourself in Icherisheher - the ancient quarter that has become a true sanctuary of the Middle Ages, where people still live. We will walk around the Old City, meandering through its chaotic streets. You will encounter the Palace of the Shirvanshahs - an elaborate residence of the rulers of the ancient state, caravanserais, an 18th-century bathhouse, the former residential house of the Baku khans, and the legendary Maiden Tower. You will also trace the footsteps of movies like 'The Amphibian Man', 'The Diamond Arm', and 'Tehran-43'.
Soviet Times and Two Oil Booms
In the late 19th century, oil extraction began actively in Baku, and local magnates built luxurious mansions. You will learn how the black gold glorified Baku and changed its architectural appearance. Stroll through the Molokan Garden, admire the Taghiyev Palace and the Baku Passage. Following the history, you will be transported to the times of Soviet Azerbaijan: you will see buildings in the style of Stalinist Empire and Cubism. At the end of the tour, we will drive through modern Baku - the metropolis of the second oil boom.
Life of Bakuvians Then and Now
One of the goals of the tour is to learn to navigate the city like locals. We will talk about the origin of ancient customs and traditions that still influence our way of life today. Additionally, you will hear about the national cuisine, typical dishes, their presentation, and their health benefits.
