About this experience
Vyšehrad is not always on the list of must-visit places in Prague. And that's a mistake! During the tour, I will prove that this district is not only one of the original and beloved national symbols of the Czechs, but also a fantastic place for discussions about Prague princes, bygone eras, and amazing legends.
What to expect
History of Prague's oldest district
You will hear the legend of the foundation of Vyšehrad by the son of the very first Czech. Learn about the first Czech princes, ancient residences, and the role of Charles IV in reviving the former status of the district. We will discuss how Vyšehrad's appearance has changed over time, as well as the special relationship of the Czech people to it as an original national symbol. Additionally, you will discover one of the most romantic and mysterious places in Prague where you can always listen to the voice of the Middle Ages.
Key monuments of Vyšehrad
I will tell you about the dominant feature of the Prague district - the Basilica of Sts Peter and Paul, visible from afar from all corners of the city and holding the special status of a 'minor basilica', which we will discuss separately. You will also learn about the oldest preserved building in Prague - the St. Martin Rotunda. Visit the burial place of figures from Czech culture and art. Explore valuable sculptures that survived the bombing of Prague in 1945. Hear the legend of the knights on horseback waiting for their moment to protect the city and the country. See the tallest bridge in the Czech Republic and learn why it is called the Suicide Bridge. And from Vyšehrad's viewing platform, you will be treated to a breathtaking view of the surroundings.
