About this experience
The excursion to the Dachau memorial complex will introduce you to the history of the first German concentration camp for political prisoners. You will see administrative buildings, prison, barracks for prisoners, crematoriums, and places of executions of the former camp, preserving memories of the most horrific events of the 20th century. You will learn about the rise of the National Socialist Party, the daily life of Dachau prisoners, and events that we must not forget.
What to expect
The first concentration camp for political prisoners was organized in 1933, just two months after Adolf Hitler was elected Chancellor of Germany. The camp near the historic Bavarian town of Dachau, 20 km from Munich, lasted for over 12 years. Many subsequent death camps were organized in its image and likeness.
It was here that the SS school was located, where they were taught to torture, humiliate, and kill people. Terrible medical experiments were conducted on prisoners... Crematoriums worked, unable to cope with the 'workload'... Even the entrance gates with the inscription 'Arbeit macht frei' (Work sets you free) — the invention of the first commandant of Dachau.
In 1965, the camp was opened for visits as a memorial complex. It serves as both evidence and a reminder of the events of that time and the victims.
During the excursion, you will see the administrative buildings of the former death camp, prison, barracks for prisoners, crematoriums, and places of executions. You will learn:
- How did an inconspicuous Austrian subject become the leader of Germany?
- What is the 'Beer Hall Putsch'?
- How did the National Socialist Party come to power?
- What are 'wild camps'?
- Who designed the clothing for the prisoners?
- What 'medical' experiments were conducted in Dachau?
- What are former death camp prisoners still silent about?
Dachau is a terrible, tragic page in the history of Germany and the world.
