What to expect
Auschwitz and Birkenau: places of remembrance
The complex of concentration camps in the Polish town of Auschwitz was established in 1940 and was liberated only in 1945: during these years, over 1.1 million prisoners were tortured here. You will learn about the creation of Auschwitz, the terrible living conditions of the prisoners, the exhausting work, the horrific medical experiments, and the liberation of the camp by Soviet troops. The tour program includes a visit to the territories of two parts of Auschwitz:
- in Auschwitz, you will become acquainted with the permanent museum exhibition: see personal belongings of the prisoners, hear shocking statistics and biographies, and examine photographs.
- in Birkenau, you will see former barracks, ramps, preserved fragments of gas chambers, and crematoria from which smoke never ceased to rise.
As a result, a trip to Auschwitz will help you better understand the history of concentration camps and comprehend the horrors of Nazism.
