What to expect
Auschwitz and Birkenau: sites of remembrance
The complex of concentration camps in the Polish town of Oswiecim was established in 1940 and liberated only in 1945: during these years, over 1.1 million prisoners were tortured here. You will learn about the founding of Auschwitz, the dreadful living conditions of the prisoners, the grueling work, the horrific medical experiments, and the liberation of the camp by the Soviet troops. The excursion program includes a tour of the territories of two parts of Auschwitz:
- In Auschwitz, you will see the permanent museum exhibition: personal belongings of the prisoners, hear shocking statistics and biographies, and examine photographic materials.
- In Birkenau, you will see former barracks, ramps, preserved fragments of gas chambers and crematoria, from which smoke never ceased to rise.
As a result, a trip to Auschwitz will help you better understand the history of concentration camps and comprehend the horrors of Nazism.
