About this experience
The Coptic quarter is the oldest district in Cairo. In its place, even before the arrival of Muslims, there was the Egyptian Babylon. You will follow in the footsteps of the Holy Family, explore the ruins of an ancient fortress, visit wonderful churches, and get acquainted with the largest collection of Coptic art in the world. We will tell you the history of these places and help you see the city in a new light.
What to Expect
Secrets of Ancient Churches
Walking through the winding streets of the Coptic quarter, we will see the ruins of the Babylon fortress, the Ben Ezra synagogue, and eight Christian churches. Each of them is interesting in its own way. You will descend into a cave with a well in the Abu Serga church and be impressed by the image of Christ under a high dome in the St. George's church. In the St. Barbara's church, you will touch the relics of the martyr, and in the Hanging church, you will examine in detail the ancient iconostasis and icons.
Coptic Museum
After exploring the religious shrines, we will head to the Coptic Museum, where ancient icons, frescoes, mosaics, and books are kept. And that's not all! There are 14 halls in the museum, fully revealing the development of Coptic art over the centuries. You will learn about local crafts and see products made of wood, ceramics, glass, textiles, and a collection of lamps. You will also admire marble columns, mosaics, and fountains brought from mansions belonging to the Coptic community.
