About this experience
I invite you to take a walk through the colorful districts of Istanbul. You will feel how life flows differently in each part of the city. We will ride a ferry between Europe and Asia, see ancient Byzantine walls, and uncover the real history of the 'Magnificent Century'. And in the meantime, we will snack on traditional Turkish treats.
What to Expect
Stroll Between Europe and Asia
I will introduce you to several colorful districts of the city: aristocratic Nisantasi, portside Karakoy, adventurous Besiktas, and authentic Kadikoy. You will see how real Istanbul lives - and how differently life boils in it from district to district. We will ride all kinds of transportation - including a chat between continents on the waves of the Bosphorus. We will admire Istanbul from above, see ancient Byzantine walls, talk about the history of the 'Magnificent Century', and visit Ottoman mosques.
Along the way, I will tell you about ancient legends, traditions, and mysteries of Istanbul. For example, you will learn:
- Was the famous Hurrem Sultan a beauty?
- How did the great Ottoman vizier race against death through the blooming gardens of the Topkapi Palace?
- Why did Sultan Suleiman save on the construction of a mosque for his favorite younger son Cihangir?
Istanbul Delicacies
The most delicious part is ahead! During the tour, I will introduce you to traditional local food. We will try the hearty Turkish 'fast food' kokorec: men usually like it, but women tend to view it with suspicion. We will drink Istanbul coffee with a hint of the unusual sweetness of 'heavenly mud' (the name is so-so, but it's tasty). And we will taste the legendary balik ekmek - don't be scared, it's a traditional fish sandwich.
Organizational Details
- Transportation is paid separately. If you are in Istanbul for more than one day, I recommend purchasing a city transport card (valid for all types of transport)
- We will visit mosques. If you have a headscarf - great. If not, we will find one. To visit a mosque, just take off your shoes at the entrance, cover your bare shoulders (everyone) with a shawl, and women should also cover their heads with a scarf
- The Bosphorus can be windy, so bring something warm. And you can order hot tea right on the ferry.
- This is a walking tour, so don't forget to wear comfortable shoes
- The tour will be conducted by me or another guide from my team.
