Church of Saint Nicholas and the Ancient City of Myra with a Professional Guide
About this experience
We will travel to the town of Demre to explore its attractions: the church where Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker was buried, and the ruins of the ancient city. I will tell you about the saint's life here and show you remnants of the 11-12th century frescoes. In Myra, you will hear the history of the once largest city of the Lycian Union and see unique rock-cut tombs and a theater.
What to Expect
Ancient Sanctuary
Demre is a pilgrimage center for Orthodox Christians as it was where one of the most venerated saints, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, preached and lived. St. Nicholas is prayed to for happiness, for loved ones traveling, and for children. You will visit the church named in his honor, see where he was buried, and admire old frescoes and mosaic with geometric patterns.
Shadows of Antiquity
Located 2 km from the church are the remains of the city of Myra. You will closely examine the Roman theater and unique tombs carved into the rocks. Imagine – they are over 2000 years old, yet many still have beautiful framing. I will explain why the tombs resemble houses and why they were built so high up.
