About this experience
You will enjoy a walk around the ancient city and university with worldwide fame and get to know its inhabitants - past and present, who created, fought, delved into the depths of science, made great discoveries, wrote books and poetry, believed, sought truth, joked, and had fun, performed daring acts, fell in love, and some, they say, later turned into ghosts and wander the alleyways at night...
What to expect
The excursion program depends on your interests - we can "meet" Newton and Darwin, Rutherford and Kapitza, Alan Turing and Stephen Hawking, as well as Milton, Wordsworth, Byron, Stephen Fry and Virginia Woolf, talk about the history of scientific thought, student life, and much more. You will learn about breathtaking pranks and "jokes" of unlucky Cambridge students, about the discovery of the structure of DNA and pulsars, about the splitting of the atom and the properties of black holes, about the struggle of religious movements, Cromwell's rebellion, and the battle for the throne.
You will see a variety of architectural styles: the austere, ascetic churches of the Anglo-Saxons, the breathtaking Tudor gothic, the brilliant, enlightened classicism of Christopher Wren, the magical stained glass windows of Henry VIII's time, the fairy-tale wood and stone carvings, and extraordinary clocks with a philosophical subtext.
