About this experience
Baalbek is the most significant and powerful landmark outside Beirut. Here you will touch the heritage of Phoenicia and the great Roman Empire. Explore incredible theories about the creation of the complex, wander through the impressive ruins of temples, delve into the culture of ancient civilizations, and hear about the secrets of the City of the Sun. The journey will be complemented by a walk through the city of Anjar, tasting Lebanese wine, and stories about the country's traditions.
What to Expect
Ancient city, gifted by Cleopatra, and the heritage of Phoenicia
From Beirut, through the mountain pass, the road leads to Baalbek - a complex of temples often compared to the Egyptian pyramids. However, the stone blocks here are many times larger in size and weight! You will unravel the secrets of the complex and explore the grand ruins of local attractions:
- Temple of Jupiter - the largest one built during the Roman Empire era;
- Temple of Bacchus - the best-preserved structure;
- Temple of Venus in the form of a shell and a square with a sacrificial altar.
I will tell you about the theories of the origins of Baalbek: official, legendary, and even extraterrestrial. And of course, here, in the center of ancient Phoenicia, you will get acquainted with its history and culture, studying the general collection of Baalbek artifacts, exhibits from the afterlife museums, and Arab times.
Scenic streets of Anjar and tasting Lebanese wine
On the way back, we will stop in one of the first Muslim cities - Anjar. Strolling through its streets, you will learn about the great Umayyad dynasty and the heyday of Anjar as a huge caravanserai at the crossroads of trade routes, as well as admire the preserved fragments of the Caliph's residence against the backdrop of the mountains.
The final touch will be the winery "Ksara", where you will taste the best Lebanese wines and walk through the cave cellars used by ancient Romans for wine storage.
