What to Expect
Samarkand's Tale
We will start with a walking tour of the historical center. You will be transported back to the times when the city was a key center of the Great Silk Road and learn about its rich cultural mosaic. We will delve into the period of Samarkand's peak, when it became the capital of Timur's empire. Gur-Emir Mausoleum, Registan Square, Shahi Zinda Necropolis, Bibi-Khanym Mosque - each monument holds an incredible story that you will uncover during our meeting.
Additionally, we will introduce you to the local art of carpet weaving and its nuances. You will see craftsmen at work and may even try it yourself. You will also visit a cozy museum with a remarkable collection, where you can try on an 18th-century paranja and a 19th-century headdress. You will also visit the musician's 'cell' to experience the charm of ancient Eastern music.
Winery Tour and Tastings
Uzbekistan's wine history dates back to the 5th century BC! You will discover the enogastronomic side of the region in the second part of the program. We will travel to the suburbs of Samarkand, to the village of Bagizagan in the Taylak district. Five generations of winemakers have been cultivating grapes in the Zarafshan River valley - and today they produce some of the best wines and brandies in Uzbekistan. At the winery, you will learn more about its history and production processes, and taste the drinks in a picturesque cellar, embodying all the sun and warmth of these lands.
