About this experience
The most important thing to know about the Resistance movement in the Netherlands is that it existed. Thousands of men and women, Dutch and Jews, communists and monarchists, Catholics and Protestants stood up against the Nazi occupation regime. Many of them paid with their lives. Who were these people and what did they risk for? You will find out on our walk through Amsterdam.
What to expect
- We will walk through the streets where the boxing team of Bennie Blum struck fear into the stormtroopers of the black-shirted units.
- You will learn how the stockbroker and respectable family man Walraven van Hall stole two million guilders for the Resistance, and how the chess player Johan van Hulst and theatrical administrator Walter Suskind saved more than 500 Jewish children from certain death.
- We will peek into the window of the house where a tobacco merchant and his wife provided shelter for people hiding from the Nazis.
- We will explore why an unnamed Amsterdam docker was honored with a monument in the square near the synagogue.
By the way, do you know why the quays along the canals were painted with white paint during the occupation? Why were fashionistas willing to line up for empty potato sacks, and tulip bulbs became such a shortage that they were not even during the height of the 'tulip mania' in the 17th century? I will tell you about this and much more on the tour of free-spirited, lively, and unconquered Amsterdam.
