About this experience
Located at the foot of the Dolomite Alps, Bolzano is considered one of the most picturesque, prosperous, and well-kept cities in Italy. I will show you its highlights: the cathedral, monasteries, Piazza Walther, the shopping, and museum streets. I will tell you who Bolzano belonged to throughout history and how it still combines traditions of different countries.
What to expect
We will walk along the medieval trading street Lauben, where business has not ceased for 6 centuries. I will show you cozy bakeries with traditional pastries: you can try it if you wish. Then we will stroll along the museum street, visit the cathedral, Franciscan and Dominican monasteries. And we'll finish at Piazza Walther, which locals call the "living room under the open sky." There are plenty of cafes where you can sit, chat, and admire the carved spire of the cathedral bell tower. During the tour, you will learn:
- How Bolzano became the "Babylon in the Alps"
- Why the residents alternate between German, Italian, and Ladin languages
- What was included in the list of eight virtues of Bolzano
- Criteria for a city resident to be considered a respectable person
- How the battle between the Ostrogoth king and the wizard Laurin unfolded
- The role of the trade route through the Alps in the lives of local peoples
I will also tell you about the woman knight of the Teutonic Order and Bolzano's Juliet. About Mozart, Goethe, and 36 emperors who traveled from Germany to Italy through Bolzano.
