If you need to find the most Venetian souvenir, every traveler will undoubtedly choose a carnival mask. You will not only touch the history of Venice's main symbol, but also create it with your own hands! In the workshop under the guidance of an artist, you will make, paint with tempera, and decorate with feathers and ribbons a traditional mask. With my help, you will understand its varieties and learn about the stories, intrigues, mysteries, and symbols associated with the cult Venetian accessory.
What to Expect
Create Your Venetian Mask
Our meeting will take place in a cozy workshop where the program with Zhanna Badoeva 'The Lives of Others' about travels was filmed: what makes this place unique, I will tell you when we meet. Here, under the guidance of a professional artist, during the master-class, you will create a personalized Venetian mask - you will make it yourself and then paint it using paints and tempera of different colors. The finishing touches will be feathers, ribbons, and sequins! As a result of the journey, you will bring back a piece of Venetian culture - an elegant handmade mask.
All About Venice's Main Symbol
During the master-class, I will explain why the mask embodies the culture of Venice. You will be transported to eras when the mask was a friend and patron, banned, and then legalized, guarding the honor of the family. I will talk about medieval laws regarding wearing masks and costumes, and why the mask became a symbol of freedom and violation of all social and moral rules of the Venetian Republic. Women masquerading as men, men dressing as women, Bauta and Tabarro, the Silent Mask and Moretta, Arlecchino and Doctor - you will learn about the history, symbolism, and significance of each traditional mask.
Organizational Details
- The mask-master-class is paid separately - 60 euros per person (working with an artist, materials)
- If desired, the excursion can be extended to 2 hours with a more complex painting technique. In this case, the tour will cost 140 euros for all participants, and the master-class - 120 euros per person.
