About this experience
Patan and Bhaktapur were once two separate kingdoms. With their royal squares, stunning carvings, and living goddesses Kumari (yes, there are more than one!), you will get to know the historical and cultural heritage of the Newars - the indigenous people of the Kathmandu Valley. You will admire the beauty of their creations - palaces and temples that have long been renowned in Nepal.
What to Expect
Patan - the City of Beauty
- Start by visiting the living goddess Kumari, who receives guests in her free time from festivals and ceremonies. We will explain in detail how the amazing tradition of worshiping a little girl as a living goddess originated
- Following tradition, we will make an offering to the living goddess Kumari and receive her blessing. It is important that the gift is red in color
- We will take a walk through the streets of ancient Patan. We will admire the exquisite carvings on wood and stone, sculptures, and architectural marvels. The city's second name is Lalitpur ("city of beauty") for a reason
- Along the way, we will taste traditional sweets and observe the work of wood and metal craftsmen
- We will reach the Durbar Royal Square, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List
- We will explore arguably the country's best museum, where we will learn about local art and imagine how royal individuals lived in the Himalayas - the museum is located in a former royal palace
- We will visit the exquisite Golden Temple and see the Kumbeshwar Pagoda, from which, according to legend, this ancient city originated
Bhaktapur - the City Frozen in Time
- What can be older than Lalitpur? Only Bhaktapur - the ancient capital of the Kathmandu Valley. We will talk about its history and amazing permanence
- We will peek into the cozy courtyard of the Vakupati temple, admire the architectural art of the Peacock Window, stroll through the square in front of the Dattatreya Temple, and try the local dessert Juju Dhau
- Through winding alleys, we will reach Taumadhi Square with the majestic Nyatapola Pagoda
- We will visit the Durbar Royal Square with magnificent carvings on the buildings and the largest sattalas - we will explain what that is
