About this experience
Rocky coastlines with unique geological formations, picturesque islets with ancient chapels and seabirds, fishing villages with Basque cuisine — on this tour, you will visit some of the most beautiful surroundings not only of Bilbao but of all Spain.
What to Expect
- The excursion will start with a visit to one of the most amazing structures in Spain — the historic Bizkaia Suspension Bridge, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can even walk along its steel structure at a height of over 50 meters or ride on a suspended platform across the Nervion River.
- Our journey will continue in a typical fishing village on the Biscay coast, Getxo, where you will stroll through its winding streets with whitewashed houses, blooming with flowers and cozy taverns. Along the way, I will tell you fascinating stories about the glorious Basque sailors and fishermen. Optionally, lunch at a seaside restaurant.
- After lunch, we will head to one of the most beautiful places in Spain — San Juan de Gastelugache. This place was chosen as one of the 7 Wonders of Spain. The Basque coast in this area is rocky and rugged, with the sea carving out whimsical formations, tunnels, arches, and caves in the coastal cliffs. The island of Gastelugache is at the center of these geological formations, next to another picturesque islet called Aketze, known as Rabbit Island, a true paradise for seabirds. On the island, there is a small ancient chapel, which can be reached from the mainland via a narrow stone staircase with 237 steps. According to legend, whoever reaches the chapel must ring the bell three times and make a wish.
- At the end of the tour, we will visit the port town of Bakio. This is the perfect place to enjoy Basque pintxos paired with the finest wines of the Basque Country — Chacoli and Rioja Alavesa.
