What to Expect
The Past and Atmosphere of the Jewish Settlement
The walk will begin from the roots of Kazimierz - on the main Szeroka Street. It holds many iconic places - here you will explore the Old Synagogue, the ritual bath mikveh, retro restaurants and cafes. You will see the active Remuh Synagogue and the oldest cemetery in Krakow. I will tell you when these sites appeared and which famous people inhabited the street. We will discuss how the first settlers lived and died, what rituals they followed, and what their relationships were like with their Polish neighbors. You will stroll by the Skalka Church, linked to the first Polish saint, discover the legend of the ancient Isaac Synagogue, and understand the connection to Prague's Charles Bridge. You will visit Wolnica Square and hear its history.
In the Footsteps of Oskar Schindler and his Workers
World War II left a deep scar on Kazimierz - during the walk you will feel how the war changed the life of the settlement. We will find the paths that the German industrialist Oskar Schindler walked, who saved 1200 Jews during the Holocaust. We will talk about the movie 'Schindler's List' - which brought fame to Kazimierz. I will reveal the secrets of the filming: why Steven Spielberg took on the adaptation of this story, why he chose certain locations, and how the grand scenes were created. Discussing the wartime period, we will also touch upon the biography of Hans Frank. You will understand how he was remembered by the residents of Kazimierz and how he treated the persecuted people.
