About this experience
The Templar Order, destroyed by Philip the Fair, never actually disappeared from the map of humanity. It took root in Portugal under the name of the Order of Christ. The city of Tomar, where the Citadel of the Templars is located, has grown around it, and today descendants of the warrior-monks still live there. I have been studying the symbolism of the Middle Ages for many years. I will introduce you to the city, the citadel, and the history of the order. Upon request, I can guide you through parts of the complex that are inaccessible to the general public.
What to Expect
Visible and Hidden Tomar
We will stroll through the cozy medieval city, shrouded in myths and legends. Visit the 12th-century pantheon of the order - the church of Santa Maria dos Olivais and its catacombs. We will visit the Church of John the Baptist on the main square. And of course, we will fully explore the citadel of the Templar Order - the Convent of Christ (Convento de Cristo). I collaborate with historians from Convento de Cristo and can organize a tour of the citadel's premises, closed to the regular tourist.
Last Refuge of Grand Masters, Symbolism and Monastic Meal
You will discover the secrets of the Park of Seven Hills, which borders the mighty walls of the majestic citadel. You will see the secret well of meditations and admire the knightly tombs adorned with magical symbols. You will taste authentic monastic dishes in a medieval tavern. I will tell you about the underground galleries connecting the citadel to the Church of Santa Maria dos Olivais, where the grand masters of the Templar Order are buried. And this is just a small part of what awaits you on the tour!
Upon your request, I can supplement the tour with meetings with archaeologists and scholars researching the history of the order in Portugal. The cost is calculated individually.
