About this experience
I invite you to a small journey back to the times of chivalry, the Holy Inquisition, and the feats in the name of faith. Who were the Templars, what was the order engaged in, and what do the great geographical discoveries have to do with it? You will hear the fascinating story of the knights Templar, crossing the river on the way to the fortress, walking through a medieval monastery, and touching the walls of an ancient synagogue.
What to Expect
History of the Knights Templar
Throughout the centuries, the history of the Templar order has been shrouded in mysteries and enigmas, which we will discuss. In the 12th century, when Portugal was battling Muslims, the king of the country turned to the Templars for help, and until the 14th century, the order defended Portuguese lands. And after their time, successors of the Templars - the Knights of Christ took over, and the Templars' work continued. Why is the order of the Knights of Christ so important? Because it was under its leadership that the most daring geographical discoveries were made, bringing glory to Portugal.
Ancient Fortresses, Unique Synagogue, and the Era of the Inquisition
You will see the main sanctuaries of the order - the Tomar Monastery and the Almourol Fortress, links of the 'golden ring' of Portugal, which also includes the villages of Obidos, Alcobaca, Batalha, Fatima, and Nazare. Along with the corners of the main Templar house, you will discover the history of the 300-year Portuguese Inquisition. You will visit the only synagogue in the country that has stood since the 15th century and hear about the persecutions of Jews. Then you will head to the Almourol Fortress in the middle of the river: a few minutes' boat trip and you will be in the citadel.
