About this experience
The observatory near Almaty is a place where you can see a stretch of the Silk Road and the vast expanses of the Assy Plateau from a height of 2600 m. For some, they resemble alpine meadows. But to us, it seems so much better here! The journey to the top is already an exciting adventure, as we will have to drive by off-road vehicle on the serpentine road. Along the way, you will see the Turgen Waterfall and nomad campsites.
What to Expect
- The road to the observatory passes through the Turgen Gorge, along fruit orchards and ancient coniferous trees. At every turn, there will be new breathtaking views of mountains and rivers. Along the way, you will come across nomad campsites - we will discuss how they live and prepare for winter.
- We will stop near the Turgen Waterfall, which we will walk to in 20 minutes. The waterfall is incredibly beautiful, with a height of more than 30 meters. It is also called the Bear Waterfall, and we will explain where this name comes from.
- Arriving at the observatory, we will explore it from the outside. Unfortunately, access inside is prohibited as it is a strategic facility. You will learn how the observatory was established and what is being studied there. Enjoy the views around - they are truly fantastic! Take a walk on the Assy Plateau amidst landscapes resembling alpine meadows, and optionally have lunch outdoors.
