You will admire an architectural masterpiece with a history dating back 1500 years. Hagia Sophia has been both an Eastern Orthodox cathedral and a Roman Catholic basilica. You will see the famous dome and find remnants of the original golden mosaic. Interactive Hagia Sophia Museum
Since 1935, by the order of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Hagia Sophia became a museum, and the plastered mosaics and frescoes by the Ottomans were uncovered. But alongside them, Islamic ornaments remained. During the tour, you will delve into the 1700-year history of Hagia Sophia, first transported to the Roman Empire, and then to the Ottoman Empire through sound and visual programs. Witness an incredible blend of Christian and Islamic symbolism, study ancient relics and icons.
Little Hagia Sophia
The Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, or Little Hagia Sophia, is an active mosque. Built in the 6th century by the Byzantines as an Orthodox church, in the 16th century, it was converted by the Ottomans into a mosque and serves in this capacity to this day. You will peek inside, learn what building was erected in its image, and what Princess Olga did here.
