Tbilisi from Vorontsov to Beria: How the City Changed?
About this experience
In the 19th century, Tbilisi was not lucky with rulers. But then Vorontsov appears - the best of the best. Under his rule, a golden age came for the city. Agmashenebeli Avenue is inseparably linked to Vorontsov's reign. On Rustaveli, we will remember another figure, under whom Tbilisi continued to develop, but not in a 'bourgeois' key anymore. We will talk about a controversial but active figure - Beria.
What to Expect
Rustaveli Avenue
Start exploring the city at the beautiful building of the Tbilisi Opera and walk through the still imperial Tbilisi. After inspecting the building of the former Museum of Military Glory, we will go inside, because today it is the National Gallery. We will see unique paintings by the famous Pirosmani. After leaving the enchanting world of the artist, we will continue to get acquainted with Rustaveli Avenue and its Soviet heritage from the Beria era.
Agmashenebeli Avenue
Here you will meet Noe Tiflis, where German colonists first settled. Then, by Vorontsov's effort, Agmashenebeli Avenue becomes a beautiful and rich part of the city on the left bank. By the way, it was in Noe Tiflis that Leo Tolstoy wrote his first novel 'Childhood'. Today, Agmashenebeli Avenue is a unique open-air architectural museum and one of the most beautiful streets in Tbilisi.
You will learn:
- Which street was the financial center of the Caucasus in the 19th century
- What merits Ilya Chavchavadze is famous for before the city
- How the ancient arena 'Kabakhi' turned into a favorite place of the Tbilisi bohemia in the late 19th century and how in 1918 the Bolsheviks tried to establish their power here
- In which luxurious hotel Tchaikovsky and Knut Hamsun stayed and what was placed here when the times of ruthless socialist realism came
- And much more
Organizational Details
- Can be with children over 10 years old
- On Mondays, Pirosmani Gallery is closed. If possible, we will replace it with the Gudiashvili Gallery (with a guide or without). Entrance to Pirosmani Gallery - 25 lari per person.

I really enjoyed the tour. Despite the museums being closed due to the holidays, Teimuraz was able to adapt the tour and showed us the Sololaki district with its stunning mansions, beautiful foyers. We were very pleased, time flew by unnoticed.
