What to Expect
Welcome to Alentejo, or 'hurry slowly'!
You will visit the largest region of the country, where plains starting at the banks of the Tejo river disappear far into the horizon. I will introduce you to the land of the scorching sun, the most fertile soils, extensive vineyards, and kilometers of wild beaches. I will tell you about the special inhabitants of the region - incredibly hardworking yet unhurried Portuguese, thanks to whom Alentejo is renowned for its amazing pastries, cheeses, olive oil, wine, and gastronomy. And of course, you will discover the local cities with a rich, mysterious, and enigmatic history.
Évora - the capital of the region and a museum city
UNESCO described it as the brightest example of Portugal's golden age city after the destruction of Lisbon during the 1755 earthquake. While strolling through the historic center, you will learn how its architectural appearance was shaped under the influence of the Romans, Moors, and medieval kings. Explore ancient temples, Roman baths, the Church of Saint Francis, and the Chapel of Bones. Hear about the bright moments of prosperity and the dark spots of bloody stories, and understand why Évora is considered the Portuguese capital of peace.
Scenic Monsaraz
Next, you will visit a tiny town proudly perched on a hill near the Spanish border. It is here, walking among the colorful landscapes of fortress walls and white medieval streets, where you will feel the true life of the region - unhurried and measured. From the viewpoints, you will enjoy magnificent views of the endless expanses of Alentejo - vineyards, olive groves, and cork oak groves. We will not overlook the history of Monsaraz, as for many centuries, the city was an impregnable fortress defending the borders and independence of the kingdom.
Family Winery
A visit to a winery is essential to complete your acquaintance with the region, as Alentejo wines are a great pride of all Portugal. You will hear about traditions dating back to Roman colonization times. Visiting one of the best winemakers, you will learn about unique production technologies, discover the ancient method of wine fermentation, and of course, taste the drink.
