About this experience
Sanremo is an Italian resort city that blooms in all colors and shades 11 months a year. Claude Monet, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, members of the Romanov dynasty, as well as artists, writers, and composers from around the world often came to admire the luxurious landscapes of Sanremo. It is the 'City of Flowers', a city of contrasts where several epochs coexist and harmonize perfectly. During our walk, you will discover the multifaceted Sanremo and will definitely fall in love with it. And how could it be otherwise?
What to expect
- We will start our walk from the 'Empress's Boulevard', where the influence of different epochs on the city is clearly seen. You will discover the stunning architectural contrasts of Sanremo: flashy villas surrounded by gardens alternate with modest fishermen's houses.
- You will learn about the origins of Sanremo and its development from a fishing village to a famous resort.
- You will see the Orthodox church of Christ the Savior, created at the beginning of the last century according to the designs of architect Shchusev for the residents of the resort from Russia.
- You will admire the majestic building of the Sanremo Municipal Casino, built in the early twentieth century in the Art Nouveau style, and learn about the history of the Italian gambling business, flourishing during the Mussolini era.
From modern Sanremo, we will delve into the historical center of the city:
- You will visit the San Siro Cathedral – a magnificent monument of Romanesque architecture from the twelfth century, decorated with works by Italian masters of different eras. Inside the cathedral, you can see the miraculous black crucifix and the wooden crucifix by sculptor Maragliano.
- You will wander through the labyrinth of narrow alleys of the old town, where it is very easy to get lost, but very easy to understand the atmosphere of Sanremo and see how the locals live.
- You will step onto the town square, where a plague of bubonic plague began several centuries ago.
- You will climb to the top of the old town to the La Pigna district, which resembles a pine cone due to the accumulation of numerous houses, take a walk in the park, and visit the baroque-style Madonna della Costa church. From the La Pigna hill, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Sanremo!
- We will stroll along the picturesque street to the Ariston theater, where the legendary song festival takes place every year. Here, I will tell you about the origins of the Sanremo song contest and why it is so loved in Italy.
- We will walk along the promenade and see the Santa Tecla Fort, which was built in the 18th century to defend the city.
