About this experience
Every day, thousands of tourists gather at the slopes of Montserrat to reach the summit and make a wish. During the journey, you will hear legends about the main relic of the monastery - the Black Madonna, as well as learn about the activities of the Benedictine monks, the oldest church boys' choir in Spain, and Hitler's secret expeditions to the sacred mountain. You will discover the unconventional landscapes of Catalonia and visit a market where Senorita Carolina will treat you to local delicacies and talk about traditional products.
What to Expect
From Plaza de Espana to the Top of the World!
You'll have to conquer Montserrat in the most fascinating way - starting with a train ride from Plaza de Espana. Then, the cremalleras (mini-trains) will take you to the monastery along the winding road, and you will find yourself in the domain of the Catalan patroness - the Black Madonna. Attend a service in the main temple of Catalonia, listen to the magical voices of the oldest boys' choir in Spain, and see the famous statue of the Virgin Mary with a black face, to which people traditionally turn for wish fulfillment. I will tell you about the mysterious phenomena related to the relic; present different versions of the origin of the abbey and basilica - from semi-fantastical to historically accurate - and outline the main stages through which the religious symbol of the region has passed. You will learn who the Benedictine monks are, how life goes behind the monastery walls, why in the mid-19th century there was only one monk left in Montserrat, and what interests the fascist forces found in the sacred mountain.
Sacred Cave and Catalan Fair Gifts
To feel the atmosphere of deep antiquity and mystery, you will descend into Santa Cova cave, where the Montserrat Virgin Mary was found. Optionally, you can take the funicular to the highest point of the mountain, which offers fantastic views of the surroundings. After mesmerizing landscapes, you will head to the local fair, where I will introduce you to the charming Carolina, who will talk about unique local cheeses, honey, cottage cheese, and sweets. At the end of the journey, you can send postcards with views of Montserrat and your address to the lion-shaped mailbox, and also visit a souvenir shop.
