About this experience
Since the Middle Ages, the Jewish community played an active role in the life of the Czech Kingdom. We will walk through the synagogues of the Jewish Quarter. You will learn how the community emerged, how it lived, who hindered it, what its existence was like in ancient times and in the harsh times of the Holocaust. The tour will be interesting to everyone interested in history, Jewish traditions, and Judaica.
What to Expect
- Old-New Synagogue - the oldest of the preserved synagogues in Europe, built in the distant 13th century
- Pinkas Synagogue - the oldest synagogue of the Prague Ghetto from 1535. Today it houses a memorial to the Holocaust victims.
- Maisel Synagogue - a private synagogue built by the head of the Prague Jewish Town Mordechai Maisel
- High Synagogue, created in the 17th century as part of the Jewish Council House. It is still in operation today.
- Klausen Synagogue from the late 17th century, which houses an exposition of the Jewish Museum
- Spanish Synagogue, built in Moorish style, richly decorated with ornaments. Here is an exposition "History of Jews in Bohemia and Moravia," and regular concerts are held.
- Old Jewish Cemetery - one of the oldest cemeteries in Prague, with burials from the early 15th century to 1787
You will encounter a history full of ups and downs, humanism and cruelty:
- We will discuss not always clear terms - Holocaust, Shoah, catastrophe, genocide, ghetto
- We will talk about how the Jewish population of Europe found themselves in the role of outcasts and tried to break free from this image, as well as who and how persistently pushed them back into it
- We will find out what forces allowed the opening of the largest Jewish Museum in Europe in Prague at the height of World War II. It has been preserved intact to this day, which cannot be said about its creators.
